Venezuelan president Maduro arrives in New York to face criminal charges

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro could appear in court in New York as early as Monday after U.S. forces captured him in a surprise operation and flew him to the city.

Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores face U.S. charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine trafficking, and weapons offenses.

President Donald Trump said the U.S. will effectively run Venezuela for the foreseeable future and access its oil reserves, while not ruling out deploying U.S. troops.

Venezuelan officials have vowed to defend the country’s resources, NBC News has reported.

The unprecedented capture of a foreign head of state has sparked both praise from Trump supporters and bipartisan criticism over its legality and the risk of a prolonged conflict.
