Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan announced her immediate resignation amid impeachment threats and a federal jury finding her guilty of obstructing immigration agents.
She cited the ongoing prosecution, her pending appeal, and a desire to prevent a partisan battle from affecting the court as reasons for stepping down.
Dugan, a nine-year veteran of the bench, described her time as judge as “the honor of my life” in a letter to Gov. Tony Evers, who confirmed receipt of her resignation.
Republicans, including Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, welcomed her decision, while Dugan’s defense team continues to seek a new trial and appeal the verdict, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has reported.
Though convicted of a felony, Dugan has not yet been formally sentenced, and federal guidelines suggest she may avoid prison time as a first-time, non-violent offender.
