Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured in a U.S. military operation in Caracas and flown to New York, where they are being held ahead of a federal court appearance on Monday.

They face U.S. charges related to drug trafficking and alleged ties to gangs designated as terrorist organizations, which Maduro denies.

President Trump said the U.S. would temporarily oversee Venezuela during a transition and focus on restarting oil production, later saying the U.S. was “in charge.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the U.S. does not plan to directly govern Venezuela but will continue enforcing an oil quarantine to influence policy, CBS News has reported.

The operation was carried out by the Army’s Delta Force following months of U.S. military buildup in the region and intensified anti-drug actions in the Caribbean.
