Woman says tea laced with pills given to ex was a chemistry experiment

On Jan. 12, 2020, 31-year-old Shea Briar was found fatally shot on a rural road in Jay County, Indiana, dying from a bullet wound to the heart.

Briar had shared a young daughter with his former fiancée, 29-year-old Esther Jane “E.J.” Stephen, a local high school softball coach.

During the investigation, Kristi Sibray, an acquaintance of Stephen, revealed that Stephen and her assistant coach, 19-year-old Shelby Hiestand, had previously discussed harming Briar and even tried to poison him with ibuprofen-laced tea.

Both Stephen and Hiestand eventually admitted to taking Briar to the rural road, where Hiestand shot him in the back, CBS News has reported.

Stephen went to trial blaming Hiestand entirely, claiming she had no motive and that the earlier poisoning attempt was supposedly a “chemistry experiment.”
