Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz ends reelection bid amid child-care fraud scandal

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced Monday that he will not seek reelection, citing the need to focus on defending the state against fraud allegations and right-wing attacks, including from President Trump.

Walz, a Democrat and 2024 vice-presidential candidate, faced scrutiny over alleged child-care fraud in Minnesota, which federal authorities say involved more than $250 million.

He criticized Trump and Republicans for politicizing the allegations, while Republicans, including Trump allies, praised his decision not to run.

Walz had planned a historic third term but said campaigning would distract from addressing the state’s challenges and protecting vulnerable communities, ABC News has reported.

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar is reportedly considering a potential bid to succeed him, though no final decision has been made.
