German prosecutors launch terrorism probe into far-left attack behind Berlin blackout

A far-left extremist group, the “Vulkan Group,” claimed responsibility for an arson attack on Berlin’s high-voltage power cables, causing a blackout that affected 45,000 households.

German federal prosecutors opened a terrorism investigation, charging suspects with arson, sabotage, disruption of public services, and membership in a terrorist organization.

Repairs to the 300-meter damaged section are expected to be completed by Thursday, while emergency measures—including shelters, hotels, food distribution, and emergency generators—have supported residents.

Authorities evacuated hundreds from care homes, and the German Armed Forces assisted with logistics and emergency power, Euro News has reported.

Officials condemned the attack as “left-wing terrorism,” emphasizing that it deliberately endangered lives and disrupted critical infrastructure.
