President Trump criticized five Republican senators who joined Democrats to advance a War Powers resolution limiting his ability to strike Venezuela without congressional approval, saying they should never be reelected.
The Senate voted 52–47 to advance the measure, sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine, shortly after the U.S. captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
The Republicans who supported it—Todd Young, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Rand Paul, and Josh Hawley—said their votes reflected constitutional concerns, not personal opposition to Trump.
Several of them argued that deploying U.S. troops or sustaining hostilities requires explicit congressional authorization, CBS News has reported.
While the resolution still faces major hurdles, the vote highlighted growing unease in Congress over the possibility of deeper U.S. military involvement in Venezuela.
