President Donald Trump announced he is cutting off talks with Iranian officials amid a violent crackdown on nationwide protests, telling Iranians “help is on its way.”
The move comes after Trump had indicated Iran was seeking negotiations following his threat of military action, with more than 1,850 protesters reportedly killed and over 16,700 detained.
Trump urged citizens to continue protesting and record the names of those responsible, while also threatening 25% tariffs on countries doing business with Tehran.
His administration is weighing both diplomatic and military options, even as Iran warned the U.S. and Israel would be “legitimate targets” if force is used, ABC News has reported.
The protests, the largest in years, reflect widespread anger over economic collapse and repressive rule under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
