European troops arrive in Greenland to boost the Arctic island’s security

Troops from several European countries, including France, Germany, Norway and Sweden, are deploying to Greenland to strengthen security as tensions rise between the United States and its European allies.

The move follows talks in Washington between Danish, Greenlandic and U.S. officials that revealed a “fundamental disagreement” over President Donald Trump’s stated desire to take control of Greenland.

Denmark plans to expand its military presence on the island with rotating NATO forces, while France and Germany have already begun sending personnel.

Trump has argued that U.S. control is necessary to counter Russian and Chinese influence and access Greenland’s resources, comments that Danish leaders strongly reject, NPR has reported.

Many Greenland residents see the increased European and NATO presence as reassurance and believe the dispute is driven more by interest in minerals than by security concerns.
