European troops from several NATO countries began arriving in Greenland as a show of unity after President Donald Trump reiterated his goal of U.S. acquisition of the territory, dismissing European objections.
European leaders expanded their military presence in the Arctic to counter Trump’s claims that U.S. control is necessary for security against China and Russia, despite Washington saying the deployments would not affect its stance.
Tensions deepened after U.S. officials acknowledged “fundamental disagreement” with Denmark and Greenland over the territory’s future.
At the same time, Trump shocked European allies by blaming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—rather than Russia—for blocking peace in Ukraine, a view welcomed by the Kremlin but rejected by European leaders, NBC News has reported.
The twin crises over Greenland and Ukraine have left Europe scrambling to respond while trying to resist Trump without openly antagonizing his administration.
