Republican Rep. Michael McCaul warned that any U.S. military intervention to seize Greenland would put America at odds with its NATO allies and could effectively end the alliance.
McCaul, speaking on This Week, acknowledged Greenland’s strategic importance but said the U.S. already has full military access there under existing treaties, so an invasion isn’t necessary.
He said a forced takeover would undermine NATO’s Article 5 collective defense commitment and could spark conflict with allies who are supposed to be partners.
McCaul suggested the U.S. could expand its presence legally or attempt to purchase the territory, but noted there’s no willing seller, ABC News has reported.
Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen also criticized the idea, calling it a “land grab” rather than a genuine national security measure.
