The Department of Justice is investigating protesters in St. Paul, Minnesota, who disrupted services at Cities Church, where one pastor, David Easterwood, reportedly also serves as acting director of the local ICE field office.
Protesters livestreamed by Black Lives Matter Minnesota chanted against ICE and demanded justice for Renee Good, a mother fatally shot by an ICE agent earlier this month.
DOJ officials called the disruption a potential federal civil rights violation, emphasizing that houses of worship are legally protected from such protests.
Protest leaders, including Nekima Levy Armstrong and Monique Cullars-Doty, criticized the investigation, saying it distracts from ICE’s actions and abuses in the community, CBS News has reported.
Easterwood, who did not lead the livestreamed service, has defended ICE’s tactics in court filings, and it remains unclear if he was present during the protest.
