Gov. Josh Shapiro alleges that Kamala Harris’ team asked if he had ever been an Israeli agent

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro claims in his forthcoming memoir that during vetting for Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2024 running mate, he was asked if he had ever been an agent of Israel, a question he found offensive, ABC News confirmed.

According to excerpts, Shapiro, who is Jewish and outspoken about his support for Israel, was also asked if he had spoken with undercover Israeli agents and about his handling of campus protests on Gaza.

Shapiro said he wondered whether he was singled out as the only Jewish candidate or if all non-federal officeholders were questioned about Israel similarly.

Harris’ own memoir frames discussions with Shapiro as focused on addressing past criticism of his views on Israel and Gaza, and his not being chosen was tied to concerns about his ambition and potential frustrations in the VP role, ABC News has reported.

Jewish officials and experts have criticized the alleged vetting questions as echoing antisemitic tropes about dual loyalty, drawing comparisons to similar questions faced by other Jewish political figures.
