Introducing ‘Coco,’ Jersey City’s new delivery robot

Jersey City is launching a pilot program for Coco Robotics, a California-based company that delivers pizza, groceries, and other items using autonomous robots.

Coco, a 100-pound, zero-emission robot with AI navigation and remote human oversight, can carry up to four grocery bags or six extra-large pizzas and travel at up to 15 mph in bike lanes, though it will stay on sidewalks in Jersey City.

The Heights neighborhood will be the first New Jersey location, with robots currently mapping routes before starting deliveries in the coming weeks.

Coco Robotics has completed 500,000 deliveries across cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and Helsinki, and the service is designed to reduce costs for merchants while maintaining safety with 360-degree LiDAR and camera perception, NJ.com has reported.

While some cities have seen criticism of robot deliveries, the company emphasizes community service, privacy protections, and the option for customers to choose human delivery instead.
