Juan Espinoza Martinez, accused of plotting to murder Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino, was found not guilty Thursday.
He had admitted sending a Snapchat message offering a bounty on Bovino, but his defense argued he never intended to carry out the plot.
Federal prosecutors claimed Espinoza Martinez was obsessed with Bovino, citing additional messages criticizing DHS’s immigration policies.
The jury deliberated for four hours before acquitting him, and references to alleged gang ties were barred from the trial, The Hill has reported.
DHS officials condemned attacks on law enforcement, emphasizing the dangers officers face amid protests and heightened tensions during immigration enforcement operations.
