A federal grand jury in Maryland has indicted Pentagon contractor Aurelio Luis Perez-Lugones for allegedly leaking classified documents to a reporter, prompting an FBI raid on the journalist’s home.
Perez-Lugones, a former Navy systems engineer, is accused of taking top-secret documents, copying them, and transmitting them to the reporter, who then published multiple articles using the material.
The FBI seized laptops, phones, and other devices from the reporter, Hannah Natanson, though a judge has temporarily blocked prosecutors from reviewing the materials.
If convicted, Perez-Lugones faces up to 10 years in prison for each count of retaining and transmitting national defense information, The Guardian has reported.
Some press freedom advocates have criticized the raid as an extreme intrusion on media independence, calling for congressional oversight of government actions against journalists.
