Heavy snow and rainfall kill 61, injure 110 over 3 days in Afghanistan

Heavy snow and rainfall over the past three days have killed at least 61 people and injured more than 100 across 15 provinces in Afghanistan, according to disaster authorities.

Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed, livestock lost, and many villages remain cut off as officials struggle to reopen roads.

Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather, with weak infrastructure, poverty, deforestation, and climate change worsening the impact of floods and heavy snowfall.

The situation is especially dire in eastern provinces still recovering from deadly earthquakes last year that killed more than 2,200 people, NPR has reported.

The United Nations warns Afghanistan will remain one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises in 2026 and has launched a $1.7 billion appeal to help nearly 18 million people in need.
