California governor Gavin Newsom accuses TikTok of suppressing content critical of Trump

California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused TikTok of suppressing content critical of former President Donald Trump and launched a review to determine if the platform violated state law.

The claims follow reports of users experiencing post delays and content being “under review,” though TikTok’s U.S. joint venture blamed the issues on a data center outage and technical failures.

Newsom’s announcement coincides with TikTok’s recent deal to form a majority U.S.-owned entity, ByteDance retaining a 19.9% stake, to secure user data and avoid a U.S. ban.

Experts say the situation highlights ongoing distrust of TikTok’s ownership and content moderation practices, especially amid politically sensitive topics, The Guardian has reported.

The platform’s new venture, controlled mostly by U.S. and global investors including Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX, has been cleared by both U.S. and Chinese authorities.
