A federal judge in Minnesota has ordered acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to appear in court Friday to explain why he should not be held in contempt for repeatedly violating court orders.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz accused ICE and the Department of Homeland Security of ignoring dozens of rulings, including an order requiring a bond hearing for a detained immigrant who remains in custody.
Calling the situation “extraordinary,” Schiltz said the court’s patience had run out after weeks of continued noncompliance.
The order comes amid mounting outrage over aggressive immigration enforcement in Minnesota, including recent fatal shootings by federal agents, though the contempt issue is unrelated to those cases, CNBC has reported.
The judge said Lyons’ appearance could be canceled if the detained immigrant is released before the hearing.
