A 34-year-old Arizona man with a prior human smuggling conviction, Patrick Gary Schlegel, was shot and wounded by a Border Patrol agent Tuesday after allegedly firing at agents during a foot chase near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The incident followed a traffic stop linked to an “active alien smuggling matter,” after Schlegel fled from a vehicle he had been driving.
Officials said he also fired at a CBP helicopter, but no law enforcement officers were injured.
Schlegel, who escaped from a prior federal sentence in 2024, underwent surgery and is in stable condition; he is expected to face federal charges including assault on a federal officer and alien smuggling, NBC News has reported.
The shooting is under investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
