China executes 11 people linked to Myanmar scam operation

China has executed 11 people linked to criminal gangs operating scam centres in Myanmar, including key figures involved in large-scale fraud operations, according to state media.

The individuals were sentenced to death in September by a court in Wenzhou for crimes including homicide, unlawful detention, fraud and running illegal casinos.

Authorities said the group’s activities, including those of the “Ming family criminal group,” were linked to multiple deaths and serious injuries of Chinese citizens.

Scam compounds in Myanmar and elsewhere in Southeast Asia have expanded rapidly, often using trafficked foreign workers forced to carry out online scams worth an estimated $40bn annually, The Guardian has reported.

China has intensified regional cooperation to dismantle these networks, repatriating thousands of people and arresting senior figures in recent crackdowns.
