Senate to vote on advancing funding package as Democrats push for ICE reforms

The Senate is set to vote Thursday on a funding package to keep most government agencies open, with a partial shutdown looming this weekend if approval isn’t reached.

Democrats are demanding reforms to immigration enforcement following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents, and they say they will block the package unless the Department of Homeland Security funding is removed.

A possible compromise would fund five of the six bills immediately while passing a short‑term continuing resolution for DHS, though the House won’t return until Monday, risking a brief shutdown.

Democratic leaders are seeking measures such as tighter use‑of‑force rules, body cameras for federal agents, and accountability standards, while negotiating with Republicans and the administration, CBS News has reported.

Most agencies, including the Pentagon, State, and Treasury, could begin shutdown procedures Saturday, but immigration enforcement is expected to continue due to prior funding.
