Anthony Kazmierczak was charged for squirting apple cider vinegar on U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar at a Minneapolis event, facing federal counts of assault and intimidation.
Authorities say Kazmierczak, who has a criminal history and health issues, appeared to make threats during the attack and had previously expressed violent sentiments toward Omar.
He also faces state charges for terroristic threats and assault.
Omar, a Somali refugee, has long been targeted by political rhetoric, including by former President Trump, who falsely claimed she staged the incident, the AP has reported.
Civil rights groups have welcomed the federal charges, highlighting concerns over rising threats against members of Congress amid a climate of dehumanizing political rhetoric.
