A man convicted of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during a 2024 golf outing in Florida was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole.
Ryan Routh was found guilty of multiple federal charges, including attempting to kill a major presidential candidate and firearms offenses, after prosecutors said he spent weeks plotting the attack.
The judge rejected defense claims that Routh chose not to pull the trigger, calling his actions deliberate and dangerous to democracy.
Routh aimed a rifle at a Secret Service agent before fleeing the scene without firing, after the agent opened fire, the AP has reported.
In addition to life in prison, he received an extra seven-year sentence on a gun charge, with other convictions running concurrently.
