Record-breaking snow blankets Japan, killing at least 30 people

Record-breaking snowfall in Japan has caused at least 30 deaths over the past two weeks, including a 91-year-old woman found buried under nearly 3 meters of snow.

The northern city of Aomori reported up to 183 cm (72 inches) of snow, breaking a 40-year record, while several other cities recorded over 135 cm (53 inches).

Authorities have deployed troops to assist residents, especially the elderly, and warned of avalanches, falling snow from rooftops, and possible power outages.

At least 290 people have been injured in snow-related incidents, including falls from roofs and accidents while clearing snow, Al-Jazeera has reported.

The extreme weather, driven by an Arctic cold air mass, has prompted government action, though its impact on Japan’s upcoming parliamentary elections remains uncertain.
