Two arrested over attempted sabotage of German naval vessels

German authorities have arrested two men, a 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek, on suspicion of attempting to sabotage Navy ships.

The suspects are accused of tampering with corvettes at Hamburg shipyards, including introducing blasting grit into engines, puncturing water lines, and disabling safety systems, which could have caused serious damage or delayed deployments.

Homes in Hamburg, Romania, and Greece were searched, and the investigation is ongoing, including whether the men were contracted to carry out the acts.

The case comes amid German intelligence warnings about increased espionage and sabotage targeting the armed forces, with no foreign link confirmed, the BBC has reported.

The corvettes Köln and Emden, part of the K130-class, were among the vessels affected, highlighting security concerns at major naval shipyards.
