Iran seized two foreign oil tankers in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, claiming the vessels were smuggling about 1 million liters of fuel, including diesel.
The Revolutionary Guard’s navy transferred the tankers to Bushehr, and 15 crew members are in judicial custody, though their nationalities were not disclosed.
The report did not identify the tankers’ flags, and Iran has previously detained vessels in the region over similar allegations.
The seizure follows a history of attacks and detentions linked to Tehran, including drone and limpet mine incidents targeting foreign tankers since 2019, the AP has reported.
The move comes just ahead of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks scheduled in Muscat, amid heightened tensions following Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests.
