Renowned Houston surgeon allegedly faked records to block patients’ liver transplants

A Houston doctor, Dr. John Stevenson Bynon Jr., has been federally indicted on five counts of falsifying medical records, allegedly making five patients ineligible for liver transplants, with three of them dying as a result.

Bynon, who served as director of abdominal organ transplantation at Memorial Hermann Health System, is accused of altering records between March 2023 and March 2024 without patients, families, or medical teams knowing.

His attorney insists the doctor acted lawfully and in good faith, highlighting his 40-year career and over 2,000 transplants performed.

The alleged misconduct led Memorial Hermann to shut down its liver and kidney transplant program in April 2024, which later reopened a year later, and prompted civil lawsuits from families of deceased patients, CBS News has reported.

If convicted, Bynon could face up to five years in prison and fines of $250,000 per count, while the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network has declared Memorial Hermann “not in good standing” due to the case.
