Senate Democrats are pressing for stronger oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), unveiling a list of 10 demands including policies like requiring judicial warrants and de-masking agents.
Republicans, however, accuse Democrats of seeking to defund ICE entirely and promote “open borders,” pointing to a failed Bernie Sanders amendment that would have stripped $75 billion from DHS and ICE.
Funding for immigration operations is largely secured by President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which Republicans say makes attempts to cut ICE’s budget ineffective.
Democrats counter that their goal is accountability and oversight, not defunding, arguing that current DHS practices are “lawless” and need reform, Fox News has reported.
Negotiations remain stalled, with Republicans considering a short-term funding extension and Democrats refusing to support another CR unless meaningful concessions are made.
