Spain and Portugal are preparing for Storm Marta, just days after Storm Leonardo caused deadly floods and forced tens of thousands from their homes.
Portuguese authorities mobilized over 26,500 rescuers and postponed Sunday’s presidential vote in three municipalities due to severe weather, while much of southern and northwestern Spain was placed on orange alert.
Saturated ground from previous storms has increased the risk of flooding, landslides, and wind damage, with gusts expected up to 110 km/h (68 mph) and waves reaching 13 meters (43 feet) along the Portuguese coast.
Storms Leonardo and Kristin earlier this week caused at least eight deaths in Portugal, extensive infrastructure damage, and economic losses exceeding €4 billion ($4.7 billion), Al-Jazeera has reported.
Officials have urged residents to limit travel as rivers remain at capacity and emergency teams brace for further evacuations and damage.
