DOJ moves to dismiss Bannon criminal case

The Justice Department moved Monday to dismiss its criminal case against Steve Bannon, who was convicted in 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify and provide documents to the House Jan. 6 committee.

Bannon, a longtime ally of Donald Trump, served four months in federal prison in 2024 following the conviction.

In an unopposed motion, the department said dismissal is “in the interests of justice,” asking courts to vacate the judgment and dismiss the indictment.

The move came as the administration declined to respond to Bannon’s pending Supreme Court appeal and instead argued the subpoena underlying the case was improper, NBC News has reported.

Any dismissal would be largely symbolic, as Bannon has already completed his sentence.
