GOP rebels rebuke Trump tariffs, blocking ban on snap repeal votes

A few Republican lawmakers joined Democrats on Tuesday to block a House rule that would have prohibited snap votes to repeal President Trump’s tariffs, allowing immediate action on tariff resolutions.

The rule failed 214-217 after Reps. Kevin Kiley, Don Bacon, and Thomas Massie opposed it, paving the way for votes on repealing Trump’s national emergency declarations for tariffs, including on Canada.

Speaker Mike Johnson had delayed the vote and argued it was best to wait for a pending Supreme Court case, but the holdouts rejected the reasoning.

Massie and other Republicans noted that any repeal would still require Senate approval and either Trump’s signature or a two-thirds majority to override a veto, The Hill has reported.

The vote is seen as a win for free-market conservatives, who say Congress should reclaim its constitutional authority over trade and end economic uncertainty caused by unilateral executive tariffs.
