Italy’s famous “Lovers’ Arch” on the Adriatic coast collapsed on Valentine’s Day after days of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas, officials said.
The natural arch, part of the Sant’Andrea sea stacks near Melendugno in Puglia, had long been a popular spot for proposals and tourist photos.
Mayor Maurizio Cisternino called the collapse a “very hard blow” for the area’s image and tourism.
Authorities warned that other parts of the fragile coastline, showing visible cracks, could also give way due to ongoing erosion, NBC News has reported.
Recent storms in southern Italy have caused widespread damage exceeding a billion euros, including landslides that forced evacuations in Sicily.
