Dangerous conditions in search for skiers missing in avalanche near California’s Lake Tahoe

Rescue teams are searching for nine skiers missing after an avalanche near Lake Tahoe, facing winds up to 40 mph and blizzard-like conditions.

The group of 15 skiers and guides was in the Castle Peak backcountry area, known for deep snow, rugged terrain, and no ski patrol.

Six skiers have been rescued with varying injuries, two of whom were hospitalized.

Authorities warned that the difficult terrain and ongoing snowstorms increase the risk of further incidents, CBS News has reported.

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a high avalanche danger warning, predicting large avalanches through Thursday.
