The navies of Mexico and El Salvador announced seizures of more than 10 tons of cocaine in the Pacific this week, including Mexico’s interception of a narco-sub carrying four tons and El Salvador’s record 6.6-ton bust from a Tanzania-flagged vessel.
Mexican officials said the operation was aided by intelligence from United States Northern Command and Joint Interagency Task Force South.
The announcements contrast with recent U.S. military strikes on suspected drug boats that left 11 people dead this week and 145 killed since September under operations targeting alleged “narcoterrorists.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken a tougher stance on cartels but criticized U.S. maritime strikes, CBS News has reported.
Separately, the United States Coast Guard reported seizing over 2,000 pounds of cocaine near Puerto Rico after suspects attempted to flee and dump their cargo.
