NORAD intercepts 5 Russian aircraft near Alaska

Military jets intercepted five Russian aircraft flying in international airspace near Alaska’s western coast, though officials said the activity was not provocative.

NORAD tracked two Tu-95 bombers, two Su-35 fighters, and one A-50 reconnaissance plane near the Bering Strait on Thursday.

In response, the U.S. launched F-16s, F-35s, an E-3 airborne radar plane, and four KC-135 refueling tankers to identify and escort the Russian planes until they left the area.

NORAD emphasized that the aircraft remained in international airspace and such operations occur regularly without posing a threat, the AP has reported.

The Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone requires aircraft to identify themselves, and NORAD monitored the activity using satellites, radars, and aircraft.
