Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for the immediate deployment of noncombat Western troops to Ukraine to demonstrate commitment to the country’s independence ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
Johnson suggested sending forces to peaceful regions in non-fighting roles, rather than waiting for a ceasefire, arguing that Russia should not dictate terms.
He criticized the West for earlier failures, including the lack of action after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, Syria’s chemical attacks, and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying these emboldened Putin.
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said it is continuing to plan a post-ceasefire multinational force under UK leadership to secure long-term peace, PBS News has reported.
Johnson framed the proposal as a matter of defending Ukraine’s freedom rather than appeasing Russia.
