Brad Reese, grandson of H.B. Reese, inventor of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, criticized Hershey’s for replacing milk chocolate with a chocolate-flavored coating in Valentine’s Day Reese’s Mini Hearts, calling the product “cheap” and “inedible.”
He also noted similar changes in Reese’s Mini Eggs and Reese’s Pieces, and posted a viral letter demanding the company “Make Reese’s Great Again.”
Hershey’s responded that the original Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups remain unchanged, but the chocolate-flavored coating on spinoffs complies with FDA labeling rules and allows for new product variations.
Reese expressed concern that international markets, like Europe, may be receiving altered versions that don’t reflect the original candy, NBC News has reported.
He says the changes undermine his grandfather’s legacy and consumer trust, while citing cocoa price fluctuations and climate-related shortages as factors behind the recipe adjustments.
