A federal judge has permanently blocked the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on his classified documents investigation into President Donald Trump.
Aileen Cannon ruled that making the report public would cause a “manifest injustice,” noting the case had been dismissed and Trump retains the presumption of innocence.
The investigation centered on allegations that Trump improperly stored classified materials at Mar-a-Lago and obstructed efforts to retrieve them.
Charges in that case and a separate 2020 election probe were dropped after Trump’s 2024 election win, in line with United States Department of Justice policy against prosecuting sitting presidents, the AP has reported.
Transparency advocates, including the Knight First Amendment Institute, criticized the decision and vowed to continue pushing for the report’s release.
