A man in his 50s fatally stabbed his wife and adult daughter and critically injured his son-in-law with a meat cleaver inside their apartment in Fairfax County, police said.
The attack occurred early Monday at the Margate Manor apartments in Mantua.
Officers responding to 911 calls found the suspect still attacking his son-in-law and shot and killed him after he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, according to Police Chief Kevin Davis.
The wife and daughter later died at a hospital, while the son-in-law remains in critical condition after surgery, NBC 4 Washington has reported.
A 1-year-old baby in the home was unharmed and is now in the care of child protective services.
