Australian police have arrested two men over the alleged kidnapping and murder of 85-year-old Chris Baghsarian, who was taken from his Sydney home in February in what investigators believe was a case of mistaken identity.
His remains were found Tuesday near a golf club on the city’s northwestern outskirts after an extensive search.
Detectives say Baghsarian had no criminal ties and are “million percent confident” the kidnappers targeted the wrong person.
Reports indicate the suspects demanded a AU$50 million ransom, allegedly intending to abduct a relative of a convicted armed robber linked to the Alameddine crime network, the AFP has reported.
Police described the crime as a “horrible” act against an innocent man, while Baghsarian’s family has asked for privacy as they grieve.
