Tensions are rising between the Pentagon and Anthropic over access to its AI model, Claude, sources told CBS News.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly demanded a signed agreement by Friday giving the military full use of the AI, while Anthropic wants guardrails to prevent mass surveillance and autonomous lethal decision-making.

The Pentagon is considering invoking the Defense Production Act to compel compliance and may label Anthropic a “supply chain risk” due to mistrust.

The company, which received a $200 million contract in July, has emphasized that Claude is not fully reliable and needs human oversight in military applications, CBS News has reported.

Officials stressed the AI would be used lawfully, similar to how Boeing planes are used without vendor control, and other AI firms like Elon Musk’s Grok are reportedly cooperating.
