Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called an early general election for March 24, following the recent standoff with former U.S. President Donald Trump over Greenland.
Frederiksen’s handling of the crisis, where she opposed Trump’s proposals for U.S. control of the semiautonomous territory, has boosted her popularity ahead of the vote.
The election will determine Denmark’s 179-member parliament, including seats for Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Polls show support rising for Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, as public sentiment rallied against Trump’s Greenland proposals, including protests and boycotts of American goods, the AP has reported.
Frederiksen emphasized the election’s importance for Denmark and Europe’s security, citing the need to define U.S. relations, strengthen defense, and maintain European unity amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.
