Fire at an Ohio farm complex kills about 6,000 hogs

A fire at Fine Oak Farms in Madison County, Ohio, killed about 6,000 pigs and sent a large plume of smoke visible for miles.

Firefighters battled the blaze amid strong winds and limited water, bringing it under control after five hours, while roughly 1,500 hogs survived and were relocated.

Two of the farm’s five large buildings were heavily damaged, but nearby structures remained largely intact, and there were no human injuries.

Officials said hog waste was contained, minimizing environmental impact, and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause, with no suspicion of arson, the AP has reported.

The incident highlights a broader trend, as over 99,000 farm animals have died in U.S. barn fires so far this year, prompting calls for thorough investigations.
