New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with President Donald Trump at the White House for their second meeting since Mamdani’s election, discussing plans to build new housing in the city.
Mamdani proposed a project with an estimated 12,000 units, presenting mock newspaper covers to illustrate the idea, which Trump reportedly received enthusiastically.
The mayor also raised the recent arrest of Columbia University student Elmina Aghayeva, leading to her imminent release, and provided a list of four additional detained students for potential case dismissals.
Despite political tensions, the meeting was cordial, echoing their earlier encounter in November where Trump called Mamdani “a very rational person,” NBC News has reported.
Mamdani emphasized that his discussions with Trump focus on improving New York City, while Trump recently mentioned him in the State of the Union as “a nice guy” despite criticizing his policies.
