SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule heads for home after historic ISS-boosting mission

A SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule undocked from the International Space Station today after a six-month mission delivering about 5,000 pounds of supplies and scientific gear.

The capsule demonstrated a new capability by performing six reboost maneuvers to help maintain the ISS’s altitude, a task usually done by Russia’s Progress freighter.

Dragon is set to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off California on Feb. 27, carrying experiments back to Earth, including materials from the Euro Material Aging study and Thailand’s Liquid Crystals experiment.

These experiments could inform stronger spacecraft materials, improved electronics, and better optical devices, Space.com has reported.

As a reusable spacecraft, Dragon highlights an alternative to single-use cargo vehicles for both delivering and returning payloads from the ISS.
