The FBI served search warrants on Feb. 26 at Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s home, and a third location near Miami, though officials declined to provide details about the investigation.
Carvalho, a former Superintendent of the Year who was knighted by Spain in 2021 for expanding Spanish-language programs, has been praised for improving academic performance in both Los Angeles and Miami-Dade County, but both districts also drew scrutiny under his leadership.
Previous controversies include a failed $3 million AI education project in LA that went bankrupt and a $1.57 million donation to his Florida nonprofit that raised ethical concerns.
Carvalho has been an outspoken critic of aggressive federal immigration enforcement, especially near schools, and has actively advocated for immigrant protections, the AP has reported.
The searches follow ongoing federal scrutiny of LAUSD, including a Feb. 19 lawsuit alleging the district discriminates against white students under its desegregation policy.
