Pet owners furious over California ban on feeding stray cats

Animal activists in Kern County, California, rallied against a proposed law that would criminalize feeding wild or stray animals, including cats, raccoons, and foxes.

The county board argued the ban would prevent the creation of feeding spots that could encourage pet abandonment, but activists countered that feeding is essential for animal welfare and for programs like TNR (trap-neuter-return) and rehoming.

Speakers highlighted legal conflicts, noting that depriving animals of sustenance is a state crime, and warned that a permit process could hinder care for abandoned cats and kittens.

Their passionate testimony prompted Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez to announce the creation of a special committee to hear further input, the U.S. Sun has reported.

The committee will aim to balance the county’s regulations with the needs of volunteers and stray animals across the region.
