Sources in Israel and Britain said Iran launched two missiles toward Cyprus on Sunday, marking what would be the first direct attack by the Islamic Republic against a European Union member state.
Israeli officials said the missiles fell into the sea after being fired toward the island, where United Kingdom maintains strategic military bases.
At RAF Akrotiri, Britain stations F-35 fighter jets, refueling aircraft, thousands of troops, and advanced radar systems.
British Defence Secretary John Healey said London does not believe the missiles were aimed directly at its bases but described the launch as evidence of Iran’s “indiscriminate” regional retaliation, 7 Israel National News has reported.
In an interview with Sky News, Healey also commented on the reported killing of Ali Khamenei, saying few would mourn his death.
