Man arrested in shooting of prominent Muslim leader in Utah during Ramadan

A man, Abdul Raouf Afridi, has been arrested for shooting at prominent Muslim leader Imam Shuaib Din in Sandy, Utah, on Monday evening.

Din, head of Utah’s largest mosque, was ambushed outside his home as he was leaving for sunset prayers, but all shots missed him.

Afridi faces 12 charges, including aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm, and possession of a weapon as a prohibited person.

Police said Afridi knew Din and had tracked his schedule and vehicle, while the investigation is considering a possible hate crime, The Guardian has reported.

Community leaders, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Sandy officials, condemned the attack, called for increased protection, and urged the public to avoid speculation on the motive.
